Dear Obama,
I am angry with you. Yes, I am angry. We cried to you with our silence and wooed you with our street noise to come to the rescue of your ancestral friends. You did accept, but you replied the wrong person. How could you have answered someone who did not ask you any question because he was lost in his warren of confusion? The call you made to Jonathan, should have been made to us on the streets, the parents of the abducted girls, Jonathan doesn’t represent us, our interest.
As native captives, we have been silent and our silence has become too loud, deafening, that we don’t hear ourselves anymore. We don’t scamper for bomb blasts and gunshots anymore, because we cannot hear the sound. Our president have had sex with the devil without using condom, we are now being hunted by our resolve to be idiotic in selecting our leaders.
Nigeria is enfeebled and humiliated by lack of dreamers and visionaries. Much more despairingly, for the past 53 or so years, primordial and even primitive considerations have been at the bottom of leadership selection in Nigeria. For example, Jonathan was supposed to lay a solid foundation for stable democracy, but due to the limitations of his vision, his killing unsuitability, and the constriction of his unpresidential heart, he was incapable of laying a foundation for a modern society he could not conceive. He worsened the problem by foisting the wrong kind of perception of corruption on equally prejudiced, fearful and hitherto passive electorate.
Jonathan keeps denouncing the pessimism of his countrymen, which is good. But he also lives in denial of the looming apocalypse. He continues to affirm the indissolubility of the country and whoop that the country’s unity is non-negotiable, which I also stand by. He believes that by and by, the constitution, if tinkered with, may deliver the utopia we crave, in spite of the indiscipline he is noted for. Dear Obama, the fact, however, is that the fabric that holds the country together is straining badly, and will sooner or later give way, for it cannot be held together by words but by action, action which we have refused to summon.
Dear Obama, you must note, contrary to the ersatz patriotism of emergency nationalists, the nation is fatally misaligned and would require substantial structural realignment. That observation remains as true today as at any other time. In fact the structural damage is much worse, thanks to Jonathan, the homespun malignant engineer of structural chaos and systemic dysfunction.
While our patriotic supporters will be dying in the trenches, our current democratic avatars will be up to their usual game of dubiety and duplicity. Set against their own record, their sanctimonious preachments about patriotism and integrity will then ring hollow and utterly hypocritical. You don’t need to be discouraged Obama, please move your army down here to rescue our girls.
Dear Obama, some are born incorrigible. Others achieve incorrigibility, while many have incorrigibility thrust upon them. Jonathan seems to manage all these at once. A prince without principality, we are always treated to untold embarrassment anytime he opens his mouth to defend the harsh reality of his understanding of issues and his unpreparedness to lead change from within. We don’t expect First Ladies to be that smart, but Jonathan’s First Lady keeps jiving at emptiness, competing on equal footing with the impaired sense of a house girl.
Right in front of our nose, Jonathan defended the mere “stealing” act of his colleagues and expressed his silly cerebral bondage that you will know if someone really steals our money in dollars. Does that sound really presidential to you? Won’t you donate a slap to him if you were physically in front of him? Won’t you call for the cancellation of the election that brought him in? Won’t you pray to God to send anger down to the people that voted him? Won’t you, Obama? Won’t you?
Dear Obama, you are getting to know about our mess now because our mess has come of age. The electoral and governance mess in Nigeria is too compelling for discerning observers not to notice. After nearly 13 years of grandstanding with expansive flourish on the false templates of democracy and good governance, the chicks are finally coming home to roost.
Psychologically and politically, Jonathan simply has no concept of the modern nation-state. His psychology and ontology are still firmly rooted in the primordial paradigm of empire, kingdom and fiefdom. Yet because liberal democracy itself is one of the bye-products of the struggle for the nation-state, a man who has no notion of the nation-state cannot be expected to have any truck with democracy and its twin-concept of limited tenure and wide consultations with compatriots who enjoy equal civil rights. It is like asking a caveman to preside over the affairs of the open society. Obama, you know this.
We need you to help us talk to Jonathan for the few months he had left. He needs to listen to the secret rumblings of the current tectonic forces and not the sweet music of sycophancy which has made him believe he was God’s greatest gift to Nigeria. Please Obama; help us convince Jonathan to place his ears very close to the ground if he wants to avert a looming general disaster. When it strikes, he should know that he would be left carrying the can while the praise singers would have moved on to the next patron. After all, as one of them famously noted, it is all a game.
It is me, @Obajeun
