Poor Johannes Kepler. One of the greatest astronomers ever, the man who figured out the laws of planetary motion, a genius, scholar and mathematician — in 1611, he needed a wife. The previous Mrs. Kepler had died of Hungarian spotted fever, so, with kids to raise and a household to manage, he decided to line up some candidates — but it wasn't going very well.

Being an orderly man, he decided to interview 11 women. As Alex Bellos describes it in his new book The Grapes of Math, Kepler kept notes as he wooed. It's a catalog of small disappointments. The first candidate, he wrote, had "stinking breath."

For 19-year-old Terhile Jirbo, it was another answer to the call of nature. But when gunfire rang out that afternoon of March 18, what seemed a harmless routine would leave a fatal scar on him and his community in Gboko, a major town in the North-central state of Benue.

Members of Mbayion community in Gboko had responded after a soldier shot Mr. Jirbo for emptying his bowel near the Gboko Cement factory, the second most lucrative cement factory belonging to Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote. The attacker was one of two-dozen troops securing the multibillion-dollar factory.

In protest of the shooting, the community members marched outside the factory, and for hours, they asked for justice.

But as they hurled insults at the soldiers, asking them to leave the community, the troops responded with gunfire, according to state officials, witnesses, and community leaders.

Shot on the leg, one woman laid bloodied on the ground, and tried to crawl to safety. Then, a soldier closed up on her, pointed his rifle directly at her head and blasted, a witness said.

Seyi Sodimu, the Nigerian born International artiste now based in Nigeria, has released the video to his new single, Pele Pele, which uses the chorus from Ebenezer Obey’s ore mi se pele pele. Seyi, who is one of the pioneers of the new Nigerian music sound, has been absent from the music scene for a while to pursue other business ventures. His last single Gbedu was released 2 years ago.

President Barack Obama watched portions of USA’s World Cup loss to Germany on Thursday.  

Air Force One gave President Barack Obama an advantage that wasn’t available to many other frequent flyers Thursday: the opportunity to watch some of the World Cup soccer match between the United States and Germany.

About midway through the approximately two-and-a-half-hour flight, aides brought still photographers to Obama’s airborne conference room to capture him watching the match. Bowls of chips and other snacks were laid out on the table.

Several top aides watched along with Obama, including senior advisers Valerie Jarrett, who sat beside the president, and Dan Pfeiffer.

Woman Who Was Pregnant For 14 Years Eventually Gives Birth

Saturday June 7, 2014, will remain the happiest day in the life of Mercy James. Reason? That was the day she miraculously gave birth to a baby girl after 14 years of being pregnant.

The baby was promptly and aptly christined Miracle. And why not? If the mother had delivered at the expected time the child would have been a teenager by now and possibly in secondary school at the JSS 3 level.

Mercy, a single parent, said of her ordeal during the 14 years she was pregnant but could not give birth: “When I first took in, I knew that I was pregnant with signs and test that confirmed that I was. Four months later, I went to hospital for another test, the result showed that I wasn’t pregnant, but had fibroid.

Subsequently, I began to experience bleeding, at least once a day. Sometimes, my tummy would protrude in the semblance of pregnancy. I went to different hospitals, and I kept on receiving the same result that nothing was wrong with me. But deep down inside , I knew that all was not well with me.

World respected anti-corruption group, Transparency International, has faulted the decision of the Goodluck Jonathan-led federal government to drop corruption charges against Mohammed Abacha, son of late military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.

Survivors of the latest Abuja bomb blast incident at Emab Plaza have been giving graphic details of how the sad incident went down in broad day light. Below are eyewitnesses account of those who saw it happen:

Bomber pretended to be drunk – Tyokasi
A 22-year-old student of the National Open University of Nigeria, Tyokasi, said: 

“I am studying Business Entrepreneurship and Management. On that fateful day, I just crossed over to buy corn because I was a bit hungry. I bought the corn but when I turned
back, I saw the man (bomber) driving a Toyota Sienna and trying to get into the plaza through the exit gate. The security men told him to go back and follow the right way but he was behaving as if he was drunk. 

"Within seconds after I left that point, I heard a big bang and found myself on the ground. My right leg was affected. Presently, I can’t stand with it."

100 men, women and children who died in the June 23rd and 24th ethnic clash that happened in Sanga LGA in Southern Kaduna, Kaduna state were yesterday June 26th given a mass burial in a parcel of land between Gwantu Kurmi and Kobin in the Local government.

28 year old Olympian and five-time U.S. national champion Alysia Montano ran an 800m race at the Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California, yesterday and people are now questioning if it's safe. 

Alysia received a standing ovation after completing the race in 2 minutes, 32.13 seconds, 35 seconds slower than her personal best of 1:57.34, which she smashed back in 2010 in a race in Monaco.

"I've been running throughout my pregnancy and I felt really, really good during the whole process.' Alysia said after the race...

Fatal accident along Lagos-Ibadan expressway, 6 confirmed dead

A fatal multiple vehicle accident occurred this morning June 27 along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway leaving at least six people dead and causing a traffic gridlock on the road. The accident happened around the Berger/Kara axis of the expressway and was caused by a truck trying to avoid another parked on the road since last month. Sudanese woman Meriam Ibrahim pictured in the back seat of a car last night moments after she was finally freed by Sudanese Police and allowed to leave the country. The Sudanese Authority had claimed on Tuesday that they had only detained Meriam at the airport over travel documents and had let her go but they actually held her until yesterday, claiming she forged the travel documents which she presented at the airport.

Meriam and her family are expected to first fly to South Sudan before making their way to the U.S to begin a new life with American husband, Daniel Wani...

Pics: Michael Babatunde breaks arm after blocking shot from Onazi

We saw 22 year old Super Eagles midfielder Michael Babatunde taken off in the second half of yesterday's game against Argentina with his arm in a cast but some of us didn't really know it was that serious. It kinda is. A scan after the match showed that he literally broke his arm after being hit by a fierce shot from Ogenyi Onazi. (see pic on the left). He's been ruled out of the 2014 World Cup.

Onazi was aiming to score a goal with the long-range shot but the ball cannoned into Babatunde's arm. The video of the incident is kinda graphic..but you've seen worse, so check on it after the  cut...

Don't call her my son' R-Kelly finally addresses transgender daughter

In case you haven't heard, R&B legend R Kelly has a transgender daughter with ex-wife and star of Hollywood exes, Andrea Kelly. 14 year old Jaya Kelly (pictured right) now goes by the name Jay after she revealed she/he has identified as male since he was 7 years old. She's dumped her female clothes and strictly wears clothes and even cut her hair. Jay admitted that her father recently found out about her transition to a boy but her mum and sister have known for a while and are supportive.

Well, R.Kelly may know that his daughter now calls herself a boy but he's definitely having difficulty coming to terms with it. When asked about it during an interview at the WCGI Summer Jam this week, R.Kelly shut the reporter up when he referred to Jaya as his son.

"Well, first off don’t start by calling her my son. As far as that’s concerned, always believe what you see - with your own eyes that is. That’s the best way to go about this business. I’ve heard a lot of things about a lot of people and it was never true.”
