A 55-year-old, Mary Akpan and her two children were on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates' Court.
According to police reports, Mary and her children, Ubong Akpan, 25,
and Aniette Akpan, 33 allegedly assaulted a pregnant woman, Mrs Chioma
Onwu at No.16, Molushi Avenue, Surulere, Lagos.
The accused family are now facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and breach of peace.
The prosecutor, Insp. Edet Okoi, said the woman and her children
conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace
when they assaulted the pregnant woman.
Okoi alleged that the accused also assaulted the complainant (the pregnant woman) by calling her a mad woman.
According to him, the accused committed the offences at 9.00 a.m on March 13 at their residence.
Okoi said the accused may be sentenced to a three-year imprisonment
on conviction because they contravened Sections 166 (d), 172 and 409 of
the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However, the trio entered a plea of 'not guilty'.
While adjourning the case to May 15 for mention, the Magistrate, Mrs
Margaret Dan-Oni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 each
with one surety each in like sum.
