Comrade Shehu Sanni donating copies of the report of 2005 National Confab to a meat seller in Kaduna
In apparent mockery and lack of confidence in the ongoing National Conference, Comrade Sani Shehu, the President of the Civil Rights Congress (CRC), has donated a large quantity of the report of the 2005 national political conference report to traders in Kaduna.
Addressing a press conference during the donation to meat sellers, Comrade Sani, who was a member of the 2005 confab under President Olusegun Obasanjo, said he took the action because the copies have become as useless as the report itself.
He expressed the fear that the current National Conference will follow the wasteful path of the previous conference.
“I want to hand over the copies of the 2005 national political conference to Kaduna traders, suya and akara sellers because they are more useful to them than to the country.
“This was the conference that former President Olusegun Obasanjo inaugurated and spent N3 billion on in 2005 which yielded no result. And again President Goodluck Jonathan has embarked on similar conference, spending N7 billion. This is another national waste, while the poor are getting poorer, innocent people are being killed on daily basis, unemployment so alarming.”
Comrade Sani lamented in that previous exercise, eminent Nigerians spent over six months in Abuja to fashion out a new political direction that would sustain our great country.
“Eminent personalities like Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Justice Niki Tobi of the Supreme Court of Nigeria were among
those that attended that very August gathering,” he said. “Thousands upon thousands of memoranda were received by the confab, and billions of tax payers’ money was spent on the confab.”
He stressed that there is nothing to be discussed in the current National Conference that was not discussed in the last national political conference under Obasanjo.
Comrade Sani aldo recalled the similarly wasteful exercise by the National Assembly in setting up a national committee to go round the country and get the views of Nigerians on how best to repackage the country for the development of Nigeria and Nigerians.
“These documents have been lying in this office since 2005, waiting that perhaps, one day Nigerians or the government of Nigerians will see the wisdom in using the documents in repackaging the country for the better,” he said, expressing regret that Nigeria moves from one conference to another, with no light at the end of the tunnel but rather, another tunnel.
“So conference has become a formality by which public funds are being wasted. It has also become a means of diverting the attention of the national news, and it is also very clear that this conference is not going to be different from the previous conference”.
In his reaction, Mallam Hashidu Maikasuwa, the leader of the meat sellers and other traders in the area, expressed delight at the donation of the old documents of the national conference, praying that more of such documents should be donated to them from the ongoing confab.
“We are grateful for this gift because we belong to the poor class, and since we are not considered at the national conference, we see this gift as our own share of the conference,” he said. “In fact, we are expecting more of this [kind of gifts] from the ongoing conference because we know that more documents that will be wasted later will be produced from this conference. We are begging them to produce them in large quantity since they will become useful to us as traders who need them to wrap our goods”.
