Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, who is also the
Chairman, Board of Trustees of Miyyeti Allah Cattle Breeders’
Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), yesterday, urged Tiv and Fulani
herdsmen in Benue state to stop the hostilities that had already claimed
scores of lives and property worth billions of naira.
The Sultan observed that such killings and clashes always occur in Guma and Gwer West Local Government Areas of the state. In a statement signed by the group’s protem National Secretary, Alhaji Sale Bayari and made available to newsmen in Kaduna, the Sultan said he was worried over the intensification and escalation of the feud which had led to burning down of Tukura village, the home-town of the Tor Tiv and his personal house.
He expressed sadness over the continued hostilities between the Fulani and their “cousins’ Tivs, which have destroyed homes, livestock, farm produce among other valuables.
He, “strongly condemned the unnecessary shedding of human blood on both sides of the warring groups and the mass displacement of people and animals of both farmers and herdsmen in the state within last the three months.”
The Sultan reminded the Fulani of the meeting he had with them in his palace on January 14, 2014, where he appealed to them to give him time to contact necessary authorities to address the problem. He said that he was still working tirelessly on finding a lasting solution to the persistent Benue Tiv-Fulani crisis in conjunction with those who matter in the state and country in general.
He called for a ceasefire to allow for dialogue, reconciliation and the return of normalcy to the affected areas. The Sultan urged security agencies to intensify efforts in the protection of lives and properties of both groups. He commiserated with the Tor Tiv over his burnt house, village and displaced subjects and sympathized with the herdsmen over their loss of cattle and traditional grazing areas in the state.
