Idimu, Lagos - Police have apprehended a pastor's wife for
pouring boiling water on her teenage sister thus inflicting physical
injuries. The assailant was subsequently arraigned before the Ejigbo
Magistrates' Court.
The victim, Chidinma Chukwu, 14
Mrs. Angela Uzoma is a 28-year old housewife, and the women's leader
in her husband's ministry at Shasha. Lagos State. She allegedly poured
hot water on her sister Chidinma Chukwu, 14.
The incident happened at the family's residence. Mrs. Uzoma allegedly
got angry over the fact that Chidinma hadn't sold all the pawpaw fruits
she had in her tray.
According to the police, Mrs. Uzoma warned her sister not to come
back home unless she sells everything. When the girl did not obey, Mrs.
Uzoma accused her of being 'too playful'.
Initially, the accused tried to conceal the incident and did not take
her sister to a medical facility, opting for home tratment. However,
someone who heard of the incident reported the matter to the local
police, and the woman was arrested.
Mrs. Uzoma says she did not pour the hot water on her sister on
purpose, adding it was 'devil's work'. She also regretted the action,
begging to settle the matter out of the court.
She brought her sister from the village 'to train her,' and the girl
was involved in a petty trade to assist the family financially.
Meanwhile, the husband, Pastor Paul Uzoma, said the incedent was
'unfortunate'. While acknowledging that his wife 'went too far,' he
stated she meant well for the girl.
When Mrs. Uzoma was arraigned before court on Tuesday, she pleaded
not guilty. She was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety
in like sum, and ordered to be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri,
Apapa, when she couldn't fulfill the conditions attached to her bail.
The matter has been adjourned till 12 December, 2013
