As many as 300 sex workers at an area around Jakande, Ajah, Lagos have become homeless as a result of a fire incident which razed their
shacks completely.
The fire incident occurred around 11pm on Wednesday, September 3 after a generator supplying power to the buildings exploded in the course of refuelling. A report said the generator was on while someone tried to increase the fuel level to ensure it ran for longer.
Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Razak Fadipe, confirmed the untoward incident, revealing the huge challenges his men faced while trying to save the shacks after men his men arrived at the fire scene.
'The fire started as a result of a generator that was being fuelled while working. It exploded and while they were trying to battle it on their own, it became uncontrollable. Over 300 bolt up buildings were consumed by the fire while some other buildings were saved with three fire trucks from Eti Osa, Onikan and Sari Iganmu, Fadipe said. 'On our arrival, we met the raging fire, but we were attacked. Some of the residents also wanted us to start the firefighting from their
end, so they were dragging the hose with the firemen and rough handled some of them. They smashed a fire truck windscreen.'
