Governor Fashola has no moral 
justification to make LASU students pay N350,000 as school fees. How 
much did he pay as a University student at the University of Benin? Even
 if you calculate for inflation, it’d still not be anywhere close to the
 numbers he is unleashing on today’s and possibly tomorrow’s LASU 
students. We can debate this from now till tomorrow, the only reason 
this will be justifiable is if an average Lagosian earns at least half 
of that amount per month. Let us get real about these issues. 
N350,000.00? Will they be guaranteed jobs after graduation? Are there 
student loans that’d permit them to pay the fees over the course of 
their stay in and out of school? What monumental value has been added to
 getting a LASU education that warranted such monumental increase in 
school fees?
The Lagos State Government must 
understand that while it often gets praised for getting many things 
right, it will not be seen as different from the lot of bad governments 
if the most essential path to self realisation is being priced out of 
the reach of not just the poor but even the not so poor. This is my take
 on the issue. And I believe it is clear enough.
A new fees regime can be put in place must it must not be blind to the socio-economic realities of the average Lagosian.
