Governor Fashola has no moral
justification to make LASU students pay N350,000 as school fees. How
much did he pay as a University student at the University of Benin? Even
if you calculate for inflation, it’d still not be anywhere close to the
numbers he is unleashing on today’s and possibly tomorrow’s LASU
students. We can debate this from now till tomorrow, the only reason
this will be justifiable is if an average Lagosian earns at least half
of that amount per month. Let us get real about these issues.
N350,000.00? Will they be guaranteed jobs after graduation? Are there
student loans that’d permit them to pay the fees over the course of
their stay in and out of school? What monumental value has been added to
getting a LASU education that warranted such monumental increase in
school fees?
The Lagos State Government must
understand that while it often gets praised for getting many things
right, it will not be seen as different from the lot of bad governments
if the most essential path to self realisation is being priced out of
the reach of not just the poor but even the not so poor. This is my take
on the issue. And I believe it is clear enough.
A new fees regime can be put in place must it must not be blind to the socio-economic realities of the average Lagosian.
