Photos of the Day: President Obama Watches The USA vs Germany World Cup Game Aboard Air Force One

President Barack Obama watched portions of USA’s World Cup loss to Germany on Thursday.  

Air Force One gave President Barack Obama an advantage that wasn’t available to many other frequent flyers Thursday: the opportunity to watch some of the World Cup soccer match between the United States and Germany.

About midway through the approximately two-and-a-half-hour flight, aides brought still photographers to Obama’s airborne conference room to capture him watching the match. Bowls of chips and other snacks were laid out on the table.

Several top aides watched along with Obama, including senior advisers Valerie Jarrett, who sat beside the president, and Dan Pfeiffer.

The final score came after Obama landed in Minneapolis.

Germany beat the United States 1-0 Thursday in soggy Recife on Thomas Mueller’s 55th-minute goal to win Group G, but the Americans held onto second place when Portugal defeated Ghana 2-1 in a game played simultaneously in Brasilia.

”Obviously it’s a huge achievement by our team to come through that group and qualify for the knockout stage,” United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann said.

The Germans, three-time World Cup champions, finished with seven points, while the United States had four after allowing a 95th-minute goal against Portugal on Sunday in a 2-2 draw. Portugal also had four, but the Americans advanced from the so-called ”Group of Death” because their goal difference was even and the Portuguese were minus three.

The script was similar to 2002, when the United States opened with a 3-2 win over Portugal, then tied the Korea Republic 1-1 and lost to Poland 3-0. The Americans advanced 12 years ago because the Korea Republic defeated the Portuguese on an 80th-minute goal.

The Americans will play the Group H winner, likely Belgium put possibly Algeria, Tuesday in Salvador.
